Restaurant review: The Glass

6 10 2021

Restaurant The Glass was established in August 2020 when 2nd wave of Covid19 was knocking the doors. It is located on the K1 floor of Kämp Gallery with The Finnish Museum of Photography K1 exhibition space. Entrepreneurs are Jarkko Myllymäki and Ykä Raitanen. The restaurant, café and rum bar, spiced with photographic art, create a completely new kind of experience in the restaurant scene in the center of Helsinki.

Visited 2nd time restaurant in October 2021. Chose 4 course menu with pairing wines. Vegan version of the menu is also available. Dishes are from a la carte list, so no surprises.

First starter was Jerusalem artichoke soup with marinated green apple and crispy artichoke chips. Creamy soup almost like pyre was delicious, slightly sweet. Apple added some acidity and chips brought some saltiness. Perfect combination to start the dinner.

For second starter restaurant served Beef carpaccio with smoked mayonnaise, vendace roe, caperssalt and eggyolk. One of the most innovative carpaccio ever eaten considering the “side dishes” on top of tender meat. Never seen roe served with carpaccio! Dish was luscious, but almost too big portion for starter.

Luckily the main course was lighter, Grilled Arctic Char, roasted beetroot, pickled candy beet with pan fried cep and green pepper butter. Fish was grilled in the right way, the skin was eatable. Side dishes were like fireworks because you could get different taste with every bite.

Dessert was also “light”, luckily, Currant leaf parfait, lemon curd seasoned with gin and juniper meringue. Parfait was close to creamy ice-cream, very tasty. And meringue complemented well providing perfect end for the dinner.

Pairing wines

First starter: Orange Wine from German Weingut Schlossmuhlenhof

Second starter: Pinot Noir from Austrian Claus Preisinger and Volker Wine.

Main course: Grüner Veltliner from Austrian Weinhof Arndorfer and region Weinland.

Dessert: Ritsch Riesling Auslese from German Weingut Carl Loewen

All wines paired nicely with dishes. As you can see, German and Austrian wines dominate, but that is refreshing as many times wine menu’s are packed with French and Italian wines.

All dishes were tasty, enough herbs and spices, although cuisine is quite close to Finnish.

We had to wait for desserts some time, which we did not actually notice. However, restaurant offered desserts for free as waiter told that he was sorry we had to wait. Excellent service!

In the summer The Glass has small terrace by pedestrian street on Mikonkatu.

REVIEW: FOOD 4+/5 – SERVICE 4,5/5 – OVERALL GRADE 4,5/5
